I am working on a graphic design company, and am currently doing banner design. I think the biggest challenge for small business owners is coming up with a consistent style to your company. Overlooking my company it is clear that i've got alot of stuff going on. I hope this is not characteristic of my mindset, but im afraid it might be. It's better to stick with one thing then taking on a million products at a time.

Communication is KEY
I have been working on some new business ideas, one of the things i've been doing has been asking advice. Sometimes the product you are selling is not communicating correctly to the audience you may or may not be trying to reach. Sometime what is absolutely clear to you, may be totally confusing to someone else. So it's important to remember what AUDIENCE you are trying to reach. Somethings are universal, if you are selling Candy perhaps you will have some candy on your blog ad or header. But what may appeal to someone, may be confusing to another, that's why its important to get feedback.
Teams are great for this, but some things you need to remember is the adviser. Are they successful at the goal you are trying to reach, i am not going to discount anyone however if they have not been successful at reaching their goals there is little they can tell you except what NOT to do. So you much discern if someone is trying to be helpful or hateful.
But ultimately are you being successful, have you made a sale, doing what works is more important that fitting a business model.

Share knowledge gain exposure...
Ok so I've been really trying to get this biz offa the ground and having victories and loses all goes with the program. Getting your branding, look and finding your niche is really hard if you are used to being someone else most of the time. I dont mean like Clark Kent and superman but i have a knack for seeing how someone ELSE is making it an assuming that will also be my path. WRONG!
Ok there are a million ways to gain exposure but I am noticing my own habits which key me in on the potential customer habits I look for. When I learn about small business via a website etc, most often the writer has an expertise in an area I dont and will have a business or further info on how to get to the goal that I desire. Most business magazines writers have a life outside of their writing otherwise how would they have gotten the experience or authority to write the article in the first place.
In other words in order to set your business apart and get noticed in the midst of a million other small business owners. Decide what your level of expertise is and write about. It will be a good way to exposure you business and possible gain new customers in the process..

Why your LOGO isnt about you!
Ok as i have been trying out different ideas for company, the biggest challenge i have found has been deciding on an image or 'look'. I am an artist so i want to make everything art, however i am learning that the best way to sell your product is to K.I.S.S (keep it simple silly) The other thing is the logo is very little about you wanting to express your creativity and more about your customer and their needs. In other words selling your art is great but if people don't know what to do with it, or can't relate it to a tangible need in their word having an eclectic ad will serve little except make you feel accomplished. The point is to get the sale. If you are selling an ideal or a theme, like buy my invites and your be savvy and fashionable, that's one thing but the issue still brings you did you make the sale. Thoughts?

Search for the Authentic
Musings on how to find where you fit.I was researching small companies and found a lot of people trying to find out who they were and i found that there wasn't a unique America athestic. Alot of people were angry that 'their' creations or styles unique to them were being copied. My question was what 'belongs' to you. Is it copying when you see someone's work that strikes you and then you incorporate those styles into your work. We know this is wrong, the question is what is your aesthetic? I was on Pinterest and noticed other looking at designs to do themselves. We all have things to learn from one another, but when does this go to far? I particular for African Americans who I have seen working designs of Africa and sometimes offend those who live on the continent. My question is in searching for you unique voice are you stealing from Africa? Do these patterns 'belong' to you. Can we rise above this and seek our own voice? thoughts?
